Standing in Line

A Simple Way to Improve your Argument

Have you ever been standing in line at the grocery store when the person behind you strikes up a conversation ? Use that to your advantage. Tell them you are a lawyer and would like to run a scenario by them, if they are willing. Most non-lawyers think we live exciting lives and will say “sure.” At that moment give a BRIEF synopsis of an upcoming arbitration or trial. No more than a minute or so. Explain your theory of the case and give the strengths and weaknesses, and finally ask “what do you think?”

Every once in a while a person will catch something you never thought of. Those are the moments that make all of the uncomfortableness worth it. Think about it, that person is just like one or more jurors in your case, latching onto something you did not think was important or did not even notice.

Overcoming the anxiety of striking up a conversation can be difficult. Far easier to look down at your phone. Tempting to get lost in your thoughts. It is socially accepted to just be quiet. But doing so would rob you of the chance to become a better lawyer. Take advantage of the opportunity to improve your argument by talking to the person behind you!
